There are numerous causes of liver disease, including toxin exposure, infection, inflammation, hormonal abnormalities and cancer. Some types of liver disease may be of no consequence to a pet’s health, while others may cause serious illness and may even be life-threatening. Dogs with liver disease may show no signs of illness, but the liver disease will be detected by blood testing when done as part of a regular health examination.
Signs of liver disease can include variable appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss or gain, increased thirst and urination, abdominal distension, jaundice (yellow discoloration of the skin and gums), behavioral changes and convulsions.
If you see any of these signs in your pet, contact your veterinarian.
