I’ve had Buddy since he was 10 weeks old. He has for the most part been very healthy. He has a very short hair cut and has had this cut for most of his life. Over the last year he has been getting these patches or clumps of matted hair that has black looking stuff entangled. I’ve looked very close and it’s not fleas or anything, it’s just crusty feeling all over his body but doesn’t seem to bother him at all. He stays in the house and only goes out to do his business.I would greatly appreciate your help with this matter.

Thank You, Gary

Unfortunately, this is a problem that would be very difficult to talk about without a physical examination. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian.

Question

I was cutting a clump of hair from behind my dogs ear and accidentally cut some of the skin behind her ear. She didn’t flinch at all and the area really didn’t bleed at all. It has been a couple of days since it occured and it doesn’t seem to be bothering her. Should I take her into the vet, so is there not much I can do except keep it clean, and apply anti bactierial ointment?

Question

My dog has had a lot of flakes (dandruff) recently and I thought he just needed grooming but I cut his hair and it continued. It’s been maybe a month and now he’s losing his hair around the base of the tail and side of his left hind leg. It looks red in those areas of hair loss, maybe like it itches but he doesn’t scratch. What could this be?

Question

My cat has extremely matted hair along the spine from the middle of her back, fanning out to the tail (though the tail is not having hair issues). She is old and arthritic, slow moving and does not groom herself, and has a bad odor. The hair clumps and falls off in small matted sections about an inch in size, but the area stays matted and clumped & brushing does not clear it. She is an outdoor cat, and does not like human contact, but lets me brush her occasionally. Her appetite is still good & she eats dry , and sometimes wet food.
