My dog gets into these trance like licking sessions. He licks his arms, paws, knees thighs, genital area and bum for minutes at a time. He doesn’t stop licking until he causes abrasions..

Very interesting phenomenon that you describe here...
Not sure what he is dealing with, but the first thing I would want to rule out are inhalant allergies, as these cause dogs to itch.
The best first step is a consultation with your veterinarian, and it would be VERY useful to have video of one of these "trances" on your phone or on a camera to view with your veterinarian.
