Helping Those Who Are Helping the Victims

by Nancy Kay, DVM on 07/07/2012

Pictured below are Harley (the Great Dane), Bogie (the blonde), and Buddy (the puppy). They are currently residing at the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, their families having been displaced by the Waldo Canyon fire that continues to burn in Colorado Springs. As I write this, some of these displaced families will be returning to their neighborhoods to discover whether or not their homes have been spared.

The way I see it, those who work at the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region have their work cut out for them. I invite you to join me in providing this organization with some support. Between now and the end of July, I will donate all of the proceeds from sales of Speaking for Spot and Your Dog’s Best Health to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region. And if you purchase books this month, I will include your name (not your contact information) on the list of donors I deliver along with a check to the Humane Society.

True confession- I feel a special bond with Colorado Springs and am deeply saddened by what is happening there. Having grown up in Denver, my family made frequent trips to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Garden of the Gods, Manitou Springs, and many other attractions in and around Colorado Springs. One of my brothers attended Colorado College there. And this summer, my youngest child is interning as a photojournalist at the Colorado Springs Gazette. Never did she dream she would be covering such a story.

Do you know what to do with your own pets should unexpected disaster strike? Help yourself to a refresher course on disaster preparedness by visiting the links found on my website.

Have you and your pets ever had to high tail it out of your home because of a natural disaster?

Best wishes,

Nancy Kay, DVM
