Making a Difference: Small Kids, Big Change

By Tamara Fox

Each year, Margil Elementary chooses a community project for the focus of classroom learning. In 2008, they chose the AAHA Helping Pets Fund. Staff and students learned about the human-animal bond, the roles pets play in our lives, and responsible ownership.

But perhaps the most important lesson was that even small contributions can make a big difference. The kids collected donations — an effort they called “Pennies for Pets” — and ultimately raised $1,412.05 for the Helping Pets Fund. That’s a lot of pennies!

Their commitment to learning, caring, and sharing makes it easy to see how Margil Elementary School earned their reputation as a “Shining Star.” They believe it, and we do too: Pets matter!
