My hamster sleeps all of the time - is something wrong?

Question

I have a male hamster. We are not sure how old he is. He used to be very active, but recently I have noticed that he is very calm. He sleeps all of the time. Is he sick?

Answer

Hamsters are normally very active and busy creatures. When they sleep for long periods of time without normal, active behavior, they could be ill. To be certain, please have your veterinarian examine him. A complete physical examination will uncover other possible clues that might be important in making sure that he gets the appropriate treatment.

This question was answered by Dr. Merry Crimi, hospital director of Gladstone Veterinary Clinic in Portland, Oregon.
